Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. It is generally very safe, has a fast recovery with minimal downtime and early return to work. However everything said and done, every surgical procedure can have its problems, and its own unique set of complications. Here are some of the problems unique to liposuctions and how to prevent them

1. general anesthesia risks – anesthesia risks are there, though very rare. There are small chances of risk with general, spinal or even epidural anesthesia. The simple trick is to have an experienced anesthetist. I consider local anesthesia as the riskiest of the lot, unless supervised by an anesthetist
2. infection
3. seroma and hematoma – these are problems that can occur if the pressure garment that is worn after the surgery is not tight fit or the patient is not compliant with the treatment
4. paresthesia – there are occasional areas on the body where there can be sensory disturbances, however these would generally recover on their own
5. urinary problems -  these can occur if too much of adrenaline is given in the tumescent solution, causing vasoconstriction  of the kidneys and the reduced urine formation.
6. water in the lungs – if too much of tumescent solution is given or if the patients in hemodynamicaly compromised, this can occur and can be very dangerous. The solution is to be very careful with the amount of fluid that is infiltrated.
7. bleeding – rare today unless a dry liposuction is done, or if there is a bleeding disorder
8. cellulite and unevenness – this can occur if uneven liposuction has been done. It is more common on the thighs and buttocks because of the tougher fat structure in these regions.

41)       What is the recovery time for Facial Liposuction?

Recovery from Facial Liposuction is a relatively short process. Patients who have their under chin, jowls, or neck treated with Liposuction can expect to experience mild discomfort with some bruising or swelling. This should subside in about seven-to-ten days. Patients may require a few stitches to close the opening made by the cannula (the tube used to break up and remove fatty tissue). Most Facial Liposuction patients return to normal activities within one week and experience the full benefits of surgery within a three-to-six month period.

Focusing the Liposuction on one targeted area of the hips allows the lymphatic tissue to drain excess fluids quickly and evenly throughout the thigh, yielding more desirable results in a shorter amount of time. The above is common practice in the US, in Colombia, plastic surgeons in most cases will do the entire thigh.

59)       What can I expect afterward?

For a day or two, you can expect to feel tired, as though your body has been through a hard workout – and it has! Your hips and legs will be stiff and sore and you may experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding or temporary numbness. Your doctor can prescribe medication to relieve this initial discomfort.

Sometimes a small drainage tube is inserted under the skin to drain excess fluid. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic ointment to prevent infection at the incision sites. Your stitches will be removed in a week to 10 days, unless they dissolve on their own. You will be fitted with a tight compression garment to be worn for up to 8 weeks after your surgery. This specially designed garment will help reduce pain and swelling, and help your body settle into its new shape. Wearing the girdle for the right amount of time can count for as much as 40% of the surgeries success.

60)       What is the long-term outcome like for most people?

You should see the visible results of your surgery within two or three weeks, but the full effects may not be evident for six months to a year. The more fat you have removed, the longer it takes for your skin to adapt to the change in shape.

Most people are pleased with their new contour, and often feel a boost in energy and self-confidence.
